Evansdale Fire Fatalities Claim Mother and Son
A midmorning blaze in Evansdale killed Renee Kathleen Hochstetler aged 22 and her two year old son Ryan. Fire crews arrived at 11 01 a m and found the one story frame house filled with smoke. They entered with breathing apparatus but the victims were located in the front bedroom. The home sustained extensive interior damage and officials said the fire started accidentally on the living room couch.

Salvadoran aid hike debated amid El Salvador crisis
Salvadoran President Jose Napo leon Duarte sought 300 million dollars in emergency aid but talks with U S officials trimmed it to 225 million or less. Sources said no progress was made in an hour and a half of talks Monday between ADM Corn Sweeteners officials and the striking Teamsters union. The strike enters its fifth month with about 180 production workers off the job since their old contract expired November 1. No further negotiations have been scheduled.

Man arrested for trespass after cabdriver assault
Police arrested 18 year old Burdell Doolin on a criminal trespass charge after responding to an attempted robbery of cabdriver Richard Knapp in northeast Des Moines. Knapp, 40, was attacked when a masked man with a shotgun tried to enter his cab on A Avenue NE. Doolin was found in an apartment building nearby and held in Linn County Jail.

IDOT chief orders plan for staff cuts in highway division
AMES AP The Iowa Transportation Commission chairman asked IDOT director Raymond Kassel to prepare a staff cutting plan. Robert Rigler of New Hampton proposed a 10 percent highway division reduction to take effect in 60 days. Kassel noted prior cuts and said he may seek more time before presenting a final plan.
