Hopes Fade For Speedy Indian Peace

WOUNDED KNEE S D AP Federal lawmen in armored vehicles patrol the perimeter as hopes for a quick peace with Sioux Indians who seized Wounded Knee five days ago dwindle amid sporadic gunfire. U S attorney general assistant Ralph Erickson says lawmen face continued fire and that officers did not return fire. No injuries reported. Talks with AIM leaders are unproductive with no clear demands. About 200 Indians, mostly Oglala Sioux, took hostages for a day and a half after raiding a trading post. Charges, including kidnapping, are being considered and force remains a potential option.
