A Washington AP report notes urbanites favor the small town way of life. Secretary Hardin argues for rural development to absorb future growth, urging investments in sewer and water systems and utilities. Freeman warns cities have become problematic while rural areas bear much of poverty and welfare need.
A Cedar Rapids public relations director for Vigortone Products addressed the Ohio Young Farmers and Homemakers Convention in Columbus arguing agriculture as the backbone of free enterprise. He cited wage, medical, and housing cost rises over recent decades. Vigortone is Cedar Rapids based. The Fayette County soil conservation district will hold a speech contest for junior and senior high students at 7:30 p.m. March 20 in the West Central school auditorium at Maynard.
Hudson area soybean growers report over 50000 dollars raised toward an accelerated worldwide soybean market development program. Most funds, about 38000 dollars, came from voluntary half-cent per bushel assessments by growers on 14th sale, with agri business giving part of the remainder. The group had set a first year goal of 100000 dollars at the New Orleans annual meeting last August. The halfway mark arrived in just over five months.
Officers of the Ames Angus Association were elected at the annual meeting in Nevada. J. Sullivan of Atheny was named president, Howard Evans of Collins vice president, Gene Upstill of Ames secretary, and Steven Brooks of Ames treasurer.
March and early March auction notices list sales at Hawkeye Downs Cedar Rapids and various rural locations. Machinery hay grain antiques real estate and dairy dispersals from named estates and sellers including Meekers Sons Columbia Junction and Frank Harlin Mt. Vernon are scheduled across several Saturdays with closing times from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Des Moines reports 35 percent of Iowa corn for grain harvested by combines in 1968, up from 32 percent in 1967 and 13 percent four years earlier. Field sales of shelled corn reached 11 percent, with Indiana, Illinois and Minnesota posting higher field sales. On-farm drying remains dominant, with 27 percent in batch methods and 15 percent by in-storage drying, while on-farm drying overall shifts between methods. Blairstown officials report three-year grower terms for Gruniewald, Kimm and Sick, Jr. elected as officers. USDA plans to donate 288 million dollars to U.S. schools.
About 116 persons attended the South Winneshiek FFA parent son banquet in St Wenceslaus gym Spillville last week awards were presented including Edward Shileng outstanding faculty member Roger Kuhn star Green hand Larry Kuennen outstanding sophomore Mark Humpal outstanding junior Loren Lensing and Dale Leuenberger for Winneshiek Co fair showmanship.
The annual Farmers Mutual Insurance Association of Tract meeting in Toledo drew about 250 members. Adolph Karkosh and Eldon Wiese were re elected to the board, with Donald Boldt elected to replace his retiring father John after 23 years. Merle Cavanaugh and Eldon Wiese were re elected as president and vice president, David E. Martin re appointed secretary treasurer, and various policy figures were reported including in force totals, premium income, losses, and policyholders' surplus as of December 31 1968. Holdover directors include Oscar Anderson Merle Cavanaugh Orville Lauterbach Marvin Ohrt G Edw Wilson Dysart and Alfred Wowhlk.
MINNEAPOLIS reports a new agribusiness center model reviving the old country store concept. Plans call for 20 centers in Mid-America this year, each costing at least $X million with annual sales around $20 million. National Farm Stores will own a farmer supply store at each center, plus an automotive dealership and other farming services. The centers will feature air conditioned stock sales, animal pens, sales arena, and offices. Federal agricultural agencies may place branch offices, and a community center will serve farm organizations. Initial development targets 72 centers per wheat and livestock areas and 18 per diverse farming areas, promising job creation and tax gains while possibly challenging local incumbents.
