Iowa debate on eight cent gas tax heads to chair vote
Iowa lawmakers face a decisive vote this week on a proposal to raise the state gas tax by eight cents a gallon, starting with four cents on enactment and another four cents next January. The plan aims to fund road and bridge upgrades as DOT braces for stimulus money and budget gaps. Governor Culver opposes tax increases during the recession, while experts urge the tax as fair and efficient for transportation funding.
