The Gazette reports Linn County recorded 1 031 confirmed abuse or neglect incidents affecting 949 children last year. State data show a 99.4 percent rise in confirmed incidents since 2000, with Prevent Child Abuse Iowa noting stronger reporting and assessment.
Numbers for other Eastern Iowa counties rose 39.2 percent to 15,060 over five years. Susan Tesdahl of St. Luke's Child Protection Center in Cedar Rapids cites testing of intervention methods and family team meetings. The center assessed 1,918 children last year, up from 1,142 in 2000, with Linn County at 21.42 abuse cases per 1,000 children.
Rising petroleum prices lift hog manure value by about 50 percent in two years. ISU expert Greg Brenneman notes manure’s fertilizer value spurs a shift back to hogs, aiding confinement building growth and farm income from either own herds or custom feeding.
