Buxton remembered as Athens of the North in Iowa
Historian David Gradwohl recalls Buxton, once a vibrant coal town in Mahaska and Monroe counties, built by Consolidation Coal in 1900. A multiracial community with schools, YMCAs and a company town structure, it thrived until 1923 when coal declined. Archaeology uncovered foundations, artifacts, and a cemetery.
