DES MOINES AP George Olsen Atlantic businessman will seek the Democratic nomination for a member of the State Commerce Commission. Olsen and his brother Pete run food markets in Cass and Audubon counties and he has been in Atlantic business for 17 years. A World War II Navy veteran and Disabled American Veterans member, Olsen is the first Democrat in the race for two commissioners this year.
HOLLYWOOD AP The guillotine is busy again in the movie industry. Four of the five big studios reportedly are operating with reduced staffs. One of them Warner Brothers is laying off 50 percent of its personnel, a trade paper said. The studio declined to comment. Most studios have large backlogs of unreleased films. Other reasons include declining theater grosses, loss of foreign markets, and the high cost of movie production.
Rep. Henry O. Talle accuses President Truman of slow response to the coal miners strike and says the government may seize and operate mines if courts sustain contempt charges. He argues Taft-Hartley authority exists but was not used promptly. He warns the nation faces dangers from current policies.

Edward J. Sykes 72 of 211 Fifth Street NW Cedar Rapids died in a city hospital at 12 45 a.m. Thursday after a long illness. Born October 12 1877 in Postville he is survived by brother Ben Sykes niece Mrs Frank Jones who with her husband kept his home and grand niece Dr Blanche Houser of Cedar Rapids. Dr Glenn Robert Beavers, 72, a retired veterinarian, died at 7 p m Wednesday in Center Point after a lingering illness. OTTUMWA AP Mrs Edna Lawrence commissioner of finance and public safety announced Thursday her candidacy for state auditor. She will oppose incumbent Chet Akers for the Republican nomination in the June primary. Lawrence a former Ottumwa school board member is Ottumwa city commissioner and wife of Matt L Lawrence. She vows campaign will not interfere with her duties and any time spent campaigning will be deducted from her city salary.
City council approves a Bartholomew and Associates survey to study downtown parking, traffic patterns, and future needs. The project may be funded as a grant loan with possible local aid to cut costs from 6,250 to 5,450 dollars. Engineer Russell Riley leads the effort and data gathering would take three to four months.
