Defense Work Bringing Farm Boys To Cities
Dr Samuel A. Stouffer warns the defense program will pull farm and small town youth into city labor. He notes defense industries already attract rural workers and a farm to city movement could flood in a year or two, delaying population growth and possibly increasing marriages and births temporarily.

He Favors Cotton Not Concrete for Air Raid Shelters
Washington AP E C Wallace a New York engineer proposed seven foot thick cotton to resist bomb penetration. He claimed a 7000 pound bomb from 30 000 feet would be stopped by cotton while six feet of reinforced concrete would fail against a 2000 pound bomb from 14 000 feet. The cotton would be fireproofed and may defeat incendiaries. Wallace’s concept drew enthusiastic interest from cotton state congress members with plans for 200 foot spans and roofed with baled cotton and steel netting.

Stokowski Plan Mocked by Bandmasters in Wisconsin
In Madison the American Bandmasters Association rejected Leopold Stokowski's army band in armored cars scheme as a publicity stunt. They said the plan earned no serious consideration after Gen George C Marshall authorized a test at Fort MacArthur, California. The association urged reliance on decades of band practice over a symphony conductor's broader field.
