The National Safety Council reports January 1958 traffic deaths at 2,730, down 5 percent from 1957 and 8 percent from January 1956, despite 12 million more cars on the road than in 1952. January 1958 saw 53 deaths, up from 40 in January 1957.
A Van Gogh lithograph stolen Tuesday from the Museum of Modern Art was found Friday outside the museum entrance. An anonymous caller directed Rene D Harnoncourt to its location. The nude print, valued at $800, was intact and wrapped in a newspaper.

Meade Alcorn, Republican National Chairman, told a Kingsport rally that Truman and Democrats seek to drive the country into a recession with gloomy talk. He argued the economy remains solid with high employment and rising wages, challenging the Democrats’ election strategy.

Stanton M Peterson advertising manager for Barnard Leas and Transport Trailers dies Saturday after a brief illness. Born January 15 1910 in Balboa Canal Zone he married Dorothy Ruge in Cedar Rapids November 14 1942. Survived by his wife his father Marinus Peterson of Glendale California and sister Florence M Peterson of Balboa. He belonged to several professional and social clubs and was a 1932 University of Iowa graduate. Services in Turner chapel at a time to be announced.

Mrs E J Burianek a Cedar Rapids resident for 34 years died early Saturday in Holywood Florida where she had moved 12 years ago. Born in 1895 at Iowa Falls she married in Cedar Rapids in 1912. Surviving are her husband Joseph two sons Lester of Cedar Rapids and Robert of Dania Florida a sister Mrs Dan Casey of St Paul and a brother Harold Williams of Williams Iowa. Services will be held in Florida.
Mrs Luther Wes ley McQuerry aged 1012 Seventeenth St NE died Friday. Funeral will be at Good Hope Baptist Church in Lancaster with burial at Manse Cemetery Manse Ky. Friends may call at Turner Chapel until 1 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral services for Mrs. Frank Trunecek, 1009 Seventh St SE, will be conducted in the Brosh chapel at 1 30 p.m. Sunday by Theodore Hlubick. Burial will be at Czech National. Friends may call at the chapel. Mrs. Trunecek was a member of Anna Naprstkova JCD.
Funeral services for Herbert Smith near Swisher are set for 2 p.m. Monday at Brush Shinee in Cedar Rapids. Burial will be at Czech National Cemetery. The casket will not be opened at any time.
Joseph Hendricks 56 of Buffalo Iowa died when his car hit a truck driven by Frank Mathey 21 of Davenport just west of Davenport. Mathey was believed not seriously injured in the Friday crash reported by UPI.

Two women sustained minor injuries in a two car crash at Wilson Avenue and Sixth Street SW Friday evening. Grace L. Dautremont of Riverside had lacerations on her forehead and knees and was in fairly good condition at Mercy Hospital. Imogene N. McCallum, 79, of Thirty sixth Avenue SW, appeared uninjured and was released after a preliminary exam. McCallum's vehicle traveled north on Sixth Street. Dautremont's car came south on Sixth Street.
In district court Friday Clarence A. Godfrey 370 Thir ty-first st dr SE pled guilty to a third offense and received a three year suspended term. Robert E. Martens Marengo route 2 withdrew a plea of innocent and pled guilty with a $300 fine plus costs for a first offense. Godfrey’s arrest followed a Nov 20 accident at Sixteenth ave and Eighteenth st SW. Four persons in the other car were treated at a hospital. Martens was arrested Oct 30 after an erratic drive on highway 149 near Fairfax.
Three lawsuits and a criminal charge were dismissed in Linn County district court. Two suits settled after out-of-court agreements involving Jean Taschner and Elsie Taschner against Iowa Electric Light and Power Company over electrocution deaths at Municipal airport. The company paid court costs. Also dismissed were a promissory note suit by General Insurance Company against Robert F. Olney and a forgery charge against John Mitchell. Restitution had been made.
A Linn county suit seeks specific performance to compel Merchants National Bank as executor to sell 7.75 shares of Russell's Guides Inc Cedar Rapids to Anthony Tschirgi and Ruth Tschirgi Berry. They offered $54,121.89 based on book value $6,983.47 per share, but the estate refuses to close.
Patrolman Ralph J. Mikesell sues Darrell Daker Theron Gordon Charles Mrstik and Joan Wink over injuries from a street fight on Third Street NE between First and Raves. He alleges assault with fists and feet, head and neck lacerations bruises damaged clothing and broken teeth. He seeks 3000 actual and 3000 exemplary damages.
In Linn county district court on Friday George H. Ross received two judgments totaling $1,676.38 against a named debtor. Donald M. faced a promissory note suit, while a third judgment against him and another party was not granted.
Bel M. Ross and the defendants faced a jury verdict with the counterclaim disallowed. The jury deliberated from 4:30 to 11 p.m. Friday. Mercy hospital secured a default judgment of 116.30 against Glenn F. Dighton.
Two collection suits were filed Saturday in Linn county district court. All Trailer Parts and Accessories of Indiana seeks $538.60 from Arnold L. Shipp doing business as Mobile Home Supply for merchandise sold December 3 1956. Chase Bag Company seeks $354.56 from Federal Hybrid Seed Corn Company for merchandise sold February 26 1957.
Lloy Bean of 417 Eighth Ave SE pled innocent in district court Saturday to false uttering of a check. He faced an information filed Friday alleging passing a $30 bad check February 17 at Witwer Farm Store No. 6 drawn on Peoples Bank and Trust Company.
Lisbon mayor Glenn Plattenberger told the sheriff's office that a burglary occurred Thursday night at the Lisbon lumber yard. Tools valued at 28.25 were stolen after intruders pried open a door.
Clerk of Court Arthur Axmear said the district court jury panel is excused until Monday March 10. All trials scheduled for next week have been removed from the calendar.

In Chariton Iowa 20 year old Jack Chandler died after a tire he was fixing at a service station exploded. Debris from the tire changer and the rim ricocheted off the ceiling and struck him causing severe head injuries.
A 60 year old coal miner Jim Marconi of Pershing was killed when slate caved in at the Blungren coal mines near Knoxville yesterday. Emergency crews investigated the collapse and crews reported the fatal accident.
