Drug trial brings back daughter's death memories
Mary Kangas of Waterloo listened to an audio recording during a federal synthetic drugs trial in which her daughter Shanda Werkmeister spoke as a confidential informant. Werkmeister died in 2018, found in the Cedar River near Waterloo after leaving her home. the autopsy ruled a drowning with no foul play but noted refrigerant in her liver. Kangas pursued answers, criticized initial police reports, and linked her daughter's drug use to her death while Ramos and others faced trial for synthetic drug distribution.
