Immigration worker gaps force Iowa immigrant check ins
In Des Moines a shortage of immigration officers prompts 35 migrants to travel to Cedar Rapids for monthly check ins. Officials cite two vacant detention posts as the reason while rights advocates call the arrangement unacceptable. Some migrants lack licenses and face costly transport and long drives to appointments. Counts says Cedar Rapids can handle the load and may allow phone or mail check ins for some cases.
