Bridge collapse ends 78 year Cedar River span

The 16th Avenue SW bridge over the Cedar River is largely demolished after Schmidt Instruction Co. used a crane and wrecking wall to drop most of the dilapidated span into the river. City Engineer Dick Ransom cited weakened piers and pressure on remaining spans as causes. One arch remains. rubble removal will take weeks. Construction of a new $2 million bridge is slated to begin in early September and finish next summer.
