Service station operators in several Iowa cities are confused by a new gasoline tax taking effect Saturday. Allen Dalziel of the Iowa Gasoline Dealers Association says a quick dealer survey found 25 to 33 percent have not been notified how to pay the tax. The bill grants the Department of Revenue power to collect the tax and adds one and a half cents per gallon on hand at closing. The July 10 deadline applies to reporting gallons on hand. The Revenue Department says forms are required and offers ways to obtain forms or request extensions. The tax targets gasoline purchased and in inventory to curb stockpiling.
Daniel R. Munro, a suspect in the February 19 downtown murders in Des Moines, waived extradition from Alabama to Iowa. He faces a Polk County charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm while serving a life sentence for armed robbery at Kilby Corrections Facility near Montgomery. He is expected to return to Polk County Jail within a week.
