Illinois Moves Against Hog Cholera Rise
Illinois Director of Agriculture John W. Lewis banned shipping feeder and breeding hogs from Missouri and Arkansas into Illinois to prevent hog cholera. The ban excludes hogs sent to terminal stockyards or slaughterhouses. Authorities cite 80+ cases in Missouri and Arkansas and 40+ recent outbreaks in Missouri, with 18 near the Mississippi border, and 37 in Arkansas, hoping the ban will be lifted soon. Hog raisers urged to monitor purchases from out of state and report illness to veterinarians. quarantines of 21 days remain required for all feeder swine entering Illinois.
