How Hitler Made Army His Puppet

Wiesbaden Germany AP Count Ruediger von der Goltz a former Reichstag member and top German lawyer says Adolf Hitler used unfounded morals charges in 1938 to drive a wedge in the German army. The case cost the army its politically independent leadership and left it weakened. Goltz cites Goering and Rundstedt in a frameup to remove Col. Gen. Werner von Fritsch who opposed the SS. Fritsch denied guilt but Hitler ordered an investigation. The two‑way probe involved the justice minister and the Gestapo with Schmidt the blackmailer testifying. Hitler insisted the suspicion remained and resumed the inquiry. Fritsch was not promoted and was forced to command a single artillery regiment. Lochner’s 1938 dispatch notes Fritsch’s rehabilitation as honorary chief of the 12th artillery regiment. Fritsch later wrote to Goltz that no rehabilitation occurred and that he would be a target, a fate realized when he died near Warsaw.
