Mostly cloudy with scattered showers through Tuesday and heavy rain in the west. City temperatures range from 58 to 83, with June rainfall totals and daily highs noted. Local deaths, births, divorces, and traffic violations accompany out of town weather and municipal data.
The crash involved a 75 foot break and a 250 yard span with a train car tipping and several box cars and two butane gas tanks plunging toward the river bank. Sparks and escaping gas sparked flames as witnesses recalled children’s screams amid chaos. David Parker, among the injured, spoke of the futile attempt to save the children.

Iowa Public Safety Commissioner Russell Brown won executive council approval to purchase seven stop watches and to solicit bids for 25 interceptor patrol cars. The watches will be used by highway patrol pilots to clock speeders from the air with bids expected to open July 9 from around four manufacturers.
Cedar Rapids approves a 196 072 expansion and improvement project at Municipal airport. The city will sign a new 50 50 grant with the FAA to fund land purchase for instrument landing systems and future runways, parking, a maintenance building and lighting upgrades.
Louis Armstrong was discharged from Spoleto hospital in Italy after a severe pneumonia attack. He planned sightseeing before returning to Rome and then New York with his wife. Doctors advised rest. Armstrong hoped to reach the United States by his upcoming July 4 birthday.
AP reports a 10sas City Star and the Kansas City Kansan ended Sunday as striking printers accepted 2 year contracts. The Star resumed Monday with an 18 page edition, no paid advertising, and a recap of events since the June 18 shutdown. The Kansan’s afternoon edition also restarted publication.
A weekend in Idaho produced the state’s largest two day death toll of the year with fifteen. Nine died Sunday and twelve in seven traffic crashes. Four died in a Mountain Home area crash. Two brothers drowned in a northern Idaho stream and a farmer died in a logging accident.
Ella Wortham 65 of Cedar Rapids died in a hospital at 9 a.m. Sunday born November 5, 1872 at Bertram. She lived with daughter and son in law Mrs. and Mr. T. J. Condon of 1942 Fourth Ave SE. Survived by four sons Charles Perry Okla Jack Elgin Marion Pawtucket Fred Cedar Rapids and sister Ada Clark. A son Baryl preceded her in death. Services at Turner chapel Tuesday at 3 by Dr. Arthur Schuldt. Burial Oak Hill. Friends may call at the chapel.
Ray Von Hart age 74 died at 10 20 a m Monday in a Cedar Rapids hospital after a nine year residence here He was born August 30 1875 in Missouri Survived by three sons El llbert Alva and Golden all of Cedar Rapids The body was moved from Turner chapel to Elliott funeral home Houston Missouri for services and burial planned Wednesday
Teresa Marie Burian age seven weeks, daughter of Richard J. and Mrs. Burian of Columbus, Ohio, died Sunday. She was the granddaughter of Leonard M. Chadima of 1322 F save and W. J. Burian family at 2219 Second St SW.
Services for William L Mochal will be held Tuesday at 10 at St Matth ew's church with Rt. Rev. Msgr. J D Kearn presiding. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial. Msgr Kearn will recite the Rosary Monday at 8 at the Monahan Stewart funeral home, where friends may call.
Former Cedar Rapids resident Miss Nell Epler dies Sunday in Los Angeles. Survived by brother R. R. Epler and sister Mrs. Ben H. Witwer of Cedar Rapids and two sisters in California.

About 200 people at the late show in Iowa Falls were unhurt.
Three Cedar Rapids children were treated at St Luke's hospital Sunday for dog bites. William Stolar, 14, 751 Staubcourt NE, was bitten by the family dog. Joseph Schmickle, 10, 4001 Midway NW, was bitten on the right side. Garry Rhead, 8, 921 Fave NW, was treated for a bite on his right leg. All were released.
About 160 driver-salesmen in Des Moines approved a two year contract raising base pay by four dollars weekly this year and next May. A better pension plan was added though a five day week was not won. City drivers will work 54 hours a week and rural drivers 60, down from 65 to 85 hours. The strike had closed Continental, Colonial, Peter Pan, and Butternut bakeries.

Temporary entombment planned at Woodlawn Mausoleum before body is moved later to Cincinnati. Reeves died June 16 from a self inflicted bullet wound. police classify as death by own action.

Bernard Izzo of the Chicago Lyric Opera Co. will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Washington High School about problems of a professional singing career. The talk is part of Washington High’s music workshop seminar sponsored by the Washington concert choir and is open to the public without charge. Izzo is a baritone soloist with the Community Concert series and a member of the faculty of the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago.
Safety Commissioner Russell Brown announced after a five hour meeting that the three patrol office buildings can be built for less than $90,000 with low bids led by McKay Rowley Construction of Cedar Rapids. Contracts will be drawn Tuesday afternoon and flown to district offices for quick approval before a midnight Tuesday deadline.
President Eisenhower nominates Lane Dwinell Republican former New Hampshire governor for the post of assistant secretary of state for administration. Dwinell, 52, would succeed Walter K. Scott. nomination awaits senate confirmation. He led New Hampshire as governor 1955 to 1959 and led Carter and Churchill firm earlier.
Ronald Smith 12 son of Mr and Mrs G R Smith suffered a head injury after falling from a horse on the family farm near Marion about 8 p m Sunday He was taken to St Luke s hospital and listed in fairly good condition today The youth apparently fell from the horse and struck his head on the ground during the fall
Hawaii voters chose Daniel K. Inouye a 34 year old territorial senator and war veteran over Patsy Mink for the Democratic Senate nomination with 50 787 votes to 21 802. John A Burns won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination with 69 152 votes, defeating Edward J Hitchcock while Gov. William F Quinn ran unopposed for the Republican nomination with 49 431 votes.
Police charged a crowd of African demonstrators outside a Durban beer hall, bundling 2 men and 38 women for jail as the city reopened beer halls for the first time since June riots. Police sealed the street. two police cars were stoned amid clashes.
