Rural areas and Martelle voters weigh 1 percent local tax
Voters in rural Jones County and the town of Martelle will decide Tuesday on a 1 percent local option sales tax. The measure appears on the constitutional amendment election ballot for those areas. In unincorporated areas most revenue would fund roads.
Jones County tax proposal backed by Farm Bureau
Jones County Supervisor Merlin Moore pitches a local option sales tax plan aimed at funding road and bridge work and property tax relief. If approved it would yield about 400 000 yearly for the county with Martelle voting separately on the measure and earmarking funds for streets parks and water. The proposal has faced past opposition including defeats in 1998 in Martelle and rural areas.
