Freeman defends Estes handling before Senate subcommittee
Agriculture Secretary Freeman defended his agency's handling of the Billie Sol Estes case during Senate hearings. He acknowledged some errors and said all officials must assume responsibility. Freeman said no current department employee improperly accepted favors from Estes and that the government lost no money in dealings with Estes. He criticized Estes' cotton allotments and his National Cotton Advisory Committee appointment as mistakes, noting Undersecretary Murphy acted in good faith.
