Axis Firms Will Not Get Assets Back
German and Japanese assets seized in the United States will not be returned to prewar owners but used to satisfy government claims against the two nations. Alien Property Custodian James E. Markham told the Senate Military Affairs subcommittee that 28 German firms had been seized and existing German ownership obscured in many cases. He noted that 14 had briefly returned to prior German owners between wars and that patents will be liquidated like other assets. Markham cited 195 German enterprises seized valued at 116.5 million dollars, including the General Aniline and Film corp as the largest, plus American Potash and Chemical, Schering, American Bosch, E Leitz, Ford Mathens, General Dyestuff, and American Wine. He warned several firms tried to hide German ownership to avoid seizure.
