Clarion De Witt Hardy, a professor of public speaking and debate at Northwestern University since 1913, died in a Chicago hospital Saturday after a month of illness. He was aged 59 and was born in Dow City Iowa.
Four persons were killed and six injured when a storm and fog broke up three planes during a goodwill flight from Roosevelt Field to Montreal. One plane crashed into Lake Champlain two miles offshore, all aboard apparently drowned in 270 feet of water. Occupants named include Frank Saglimbene and Steve Kaye among others. Two other planes made forced landings with minor injuries to their crews.
President Roosevelt rode toward Hyde Park after a large rally in Franklin Field where he criticized economic royalists and privileged princes. Officials hailed the ovation as among his strongest since entering politics. He planned to spend Sunday and Monday with his mother at Hyde Park.
Contributions received Saturday raise the Camp Good Health Fund to 2630.52. Donations include 5.25 from the St Pauls church Sunday school class Anna and a two dollar gift from a Mount Vernon friend. The fund supports Camp Good Health, a summer health camp run by the Public Health Nursing association for physically handicapped needy children in Cedar Rapids.
United States Senator Alben W. Barkley of Kentucky sailed from New York aboard the liner Aquitania to attend sessions of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Budapest. He was the keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention.
Myrna Loy and Arthur Hornblow were married at noon in Ensenada Mexico by High Justice Jaime. The MGM star and Paramount producer, long courted, left for the Frank Centrak ranch at Palos Verdes for their honeymoon after the ceremony. Accompanied by Shirley Hughes and Ray Ramsey, the couple’s union followed a Reno divorce for Hornblow.
Thomas Meighan the 57 year old film star long ill at his Long Island home was reported much improved on Saturday by household members. He was said to be sitting up.
In Berlin Reichsfuehrer Adolf Hitler hosted former heavyweight champion Max Schmeling on Saturday. Hitler congratulated Schmeling for defeating Joe Louis in a recent bout.
A 6 year old boy from Schuyler Nebraska Bobby Mentzer placed a Fourth of July torpedo in his mouth and bit down. The device exploded causing a ruptured left eardrum and facial lacerations. He was being treated in Omaha hospital Saturday.
Philadelphia RP reports James A. Farley was re elected national chairman of the Democratic Party. The national committee planning a New York City headquarters and a mid July start for the presidential drive. Farley said any office departure would come from President Roosevelt after future talks. New officers named include L W Robert Jr as secretary and W Forbes Morgan as treasurer, with vice chairmen Garner C E Broughton and Mrs Ann Struble.
The city equalled its heat record of 994 degrees Saturday between 3 and 4 p.m. No relief appeared as the day stayed hot. Temperatures cooled from 92 at 7 p.m. to 78 by 10 p.m.
The forecast covers the upper Mississippi and lower Missouri valleys and the northern and central great plains. No heavy rain expected though one or two local showers possible. temperatures mostly moderate with limited extremes.
On the Philadelphia to Hyde Park train Roosevelt pressed Governor Lehman to run again for New York governor to aid the Democratic Party. Lehman and Mrs. Lehman rode with the Roosevelts as the presidential trio discussed the political move amid the campaign tour.
