Rumsfeld Confirms Insurgent Meetings in Iraq
Secret talks reportedly occurred June 3 and June 13 at a villa near Balad north of Baghdad with four American officials meeting insurgent leaders. Rumsfeld questioned the report saying such meetings likely occurred, while militant groups denied negotiating, stressing their fight is religiously motivated. He said the discussions were not negotiations but attempts to facilitate outreach by the Shiite-led government to minority Sunni Arabs.
