Sweden tops ranking of women status worldwide study says

Washington AP reports the Population Crisis Committee ranked nearly 100 countries on women status, with Sweden leading the very good tier followed by Finland and the United States. Bangladesh, Mali, Afghanistan, North Yemen and Pakistan sit bottom five. The study cites health, marriage, education, employment and social equality in measuring disparity.

Heat warnings push to protect poor in extreme heat

The Centers for Disease Control after analyzing 1700 heat related deaths in 1980 urge changes in heat prevention for the poor and elderly. Fans may worsen heat at 100 degrees Fahrenheit and extended fan use did not reduce heat illness. Public health officers urged cooling strategies and medical monitoring for drugs that reduce perspiration.

Vietnamese youths find foster families in Cedar Rapids

Vanessa Shelton reports on Chan Phan and Kim Nguyen who escaped war torn South Vietnam as children and found refuge in refugee camps in Indonesia and Malaysia. After seven years in the United States they, now 20, excel in Washington High School courses and language skills while living with foster families through Lutheran Social Service.

Finding homes not so easy Shelton

Lutheran Social Service workers report a shortage of foster homes for Southeast Asian children in Linn and Jones counties. About half of 87 foster homes care for Vietnam and Cambodia refugees, while the rest house American-born children. Four Vietnamese youths were recently turned away due to lack of available foster homes.
