Sheriff and attorney clash over nuclear protest case
Linn County Sheriff Orlie Workman defended his role in the March 24 demonstration against nuclear power and disputed County Attorney Eugene Kopecky’s remarks about the arrests. Kopecky called the acquittal of 12 trespass suspects unsurprising and emphasized planning by demonstrators. Both men stressed no violence occurred and denied any deals. On this date in 1844, Mormon leaders Joseph and Hyrum Smith were killed at Carthage, leading Brigham Young to lead the LDS Church.
