The Stutsman brothers Scott, 13, and Mark, 14, of Iowa City swept the junior steer show at the All Iowa fair. Scott displayed the 1,080-pound grand champion Da kota while Mark exhibited the 1,025-pound champion Hereford Hers. Their parents are Ron and Mrs. Stutsman.
The crossbred division with 85 of 133 entries produced both grand and reserve grand champions as siblings and first-time exhibitors drew cheers. Lonny Sievers, 16, Stockton, showed the reserve grand champion, a 1,023 pound three-way crossbred with a daily gain of 2.58 pounds. Other breed champions included Scott Eichhorn, 12, Tipton, with a 1,180 pound Angus entry gaining 1.81 daily, and Joe Sladek, 13, Iowa City, with a 1,027 pound Shorthorn gaining 2.87. Additional reserve breed champions were Bill Merritt, Springville, Angus 1,010 pounds at 2.13 daily. Mark Core, Pleasantville, Hereford 985 pounds at 2.01. and Peter Hunter, Cogdon, Short Horn 1,100 pounds at 2.68 daily.
Winton Etchen executive vice president of the Iowa Fertilizer and Chemical Assay warns that EPA pesticide use restrictions threaten corn crops and farm livelihoods. He says substitutions reduce quality, could force farming without pesticides, and that many Iowa farmers await which chemicals will be restricted amid EPA delays.
