Linn county supervisors clarified who must buy a landfill permit for use of the county site on Highway 13. Rural residents who use the landfill may buy a six month or annual permit, with pricing per person per household, while private haulers influence enforcement. Jury Deliberations Expected in Wedelstedt Arson Case

A Cerro Gordo County jury is expected to begin deliberations Friday afternoon in the Cedar Rapids arson retrial of Edward J. Wedelstedt, an adult book dealer. The first trial ended mistrial on a 9-3 vote for conviction over whether Wedelstedt counseled and procured the burning of the Salty Dog tavern, which was being converted to an adult theater. The state’s key witness, Thomas Meade, said to have helped set the fire, teamed with others to record Wedelstedt’s statements, while the defense argued the contested remark could be contextually a denial. The trial included new defense claims about the timing of Meade’s recollection related to the building’s use and ownership changes.
