Snead Fails but U S in Cup Victory

Arnold Palmer led the United States with Sam Snead to win the Canada Cup at Portmarnock Ireland. Van Donck captured the individual title as Snead faltered late. the U S claimed the team crown despite Snead missing the chance to win the individual. Palmer heads to St Andrews for the British Open after the event.

Dubuque Stamping Upsets Cr Rapids in Softball Split

Happitime of Dubuque defeated the C. R. club twice at Ellis Park to snap an eight game winning streak. Meyer delivered a 2 run homer in the 3rd inning of the first game, final 2-1. Hettrick also homered for Happitime while Wise homered for Cr Rapids in the nightcap, final 9-6 as Dubuque rallied with five runs in the fifth.

Holets Hats McVitie In 11 0 Victory At West Branch

Bob Holets pitched five innings of no hit baseball and batted in a three run homer in the first inning helping Mechanicsville's summer team to an 11-0 win over West Branch Sunday. Holets added a fifth inning triple as the offense totaled 13 hits led by Holets with both his pitching and hitting.

Monti's Hall Captures Cedar Rapids Amateur Title

Bill Hall edged John Liechty by one stroke to win the Cedar Rapids Amateur golf tournament at Elllis Park. Hall, a former Iowa State standout now residing in Monticello, opened with 69 after a 75 on Saturday to finish 36-33-39 for the title. Liechty, a top contender, missed a likely tying putt on the final hole.
