Iowa Tax Burden Grows Faster Than Capacity to Pay
Iowa's direct and indirect taxes rose 15.6 percent since 1923, exceeding population growth. The 1931 tax load reached over 157.8 million, with 1923 at 136.5 million, while valuations fell and new levies like gasoline taxes and real estate fees increased. The legislative committee notes tax increases outpace residents' ability to pay.
