Shooting suspect struggled with meth addiction
Brent Kannegieter, a family friend for more than 40 years, described Mark Becker 24, charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of Ed Thomas 58, longtime Aplington Parkersburg High football coach. Becker, once a player under Thomas, faced mental health issues linked to methamphetamine use and was in custody after a high speed chase. Becker's release and hospital stay sparked disputes over notification procedures. Becker is held on a one million dollar bond as the Thomas family mourns.
