Flood relief grant funds 550 Iowa jobs in 2008 program
A $17.1 million National Emergency Grant will hire 550 Iowans to aid flood recovery across the state. Most positions are in Linn County with Cedar Rapids receiving about 200 workers. Iowa City and Coralville will get 20 and 30 respectively. Workers may earn up to 12000 over six months and placements include the African American Historical Museum and Cultural Center of Iowa.

City Council Seeks FEMA Trailers After Flood
Cedar Rapids city leaders, after hearing flood stories, agree to demolish about 300 dangerous structures marked with purple placards. They ask FEMA to send 500 trailer homes within 30 days to ease temporary housing needs. A line will be drawn to show areas where damaged homes cannot be rebuilt. Temporary moratorium on permits outside the 500 year flood plain may be lifted for green placard properties.

Vandals kill about 50 ducks and geese at Bever Park zoo
In Cedar Rapids, vandals broke into Bever Park Children's Zoo overnight and stoned and beat around 50 ducks and geese to death. A white snow goose was among the victims, with others found floating or piled near a broken lake. 100 birds remain, all unable to fly.
