Court blocks 1993 religious rights expansion in Boerne case
The Supreme Court invalidated the 1993 law expanding religious protections, ruling that neutral and generally applicable laws prevail over religion based claims when officials act without hostility to religion. The decision cites City of Boerne v Flores and notes Kennedy joined by Rehnquist Stevens Scalia Thomas Ginsburg. Justice OConnor dissented, calling peyote precedent wrongly decided.
