Soldier rescues driver from pond after car skids
Master Sgt. Ron Downing of the Iowa National Guard plunged into a 30-foot pond near Cedar Rapids Airport to save Harvey H. Knock, 82, who lost control of his car. Knock was in fair condition at Mercy Medical Center. Police and a helicopter crew assisted as Downing relayed the dramatic rescue.

Iowa lawmakers quickly backed a fiscal 1993 budget deal. Gov. Branstad signed it into law before 6 pm as the 38 6 Senate vote and 70 23 House vote followed a four hour special session.
