Japanese Stars Lure Fans Then Flee Turmoil in Tokyo Sidewalk Rally

Twenty Japanese film theater and TV stars held an impromptu sidewalk performance in downtown Tokyo to aid Niigata earthquake victims. A 2,000 strong crowd of teens caused a melee as they surged for autographs, shoving and shouting. Police intervened after 30 minutes and the stars fled to a nearby building. Only $55 was raised before the disruption.
