Repairs Loom Over Linn County Home Boilers Upgrade Debate

Linn county supervisors weighed options for the county home steam boilers tied to a 1922 coal system. Des Moines boiler expert Herman Fust warned the common wall between boilers is in danger of collapse and replacement may cost 3500 to 15000 dollars. He favored smaller new boilers that could be moved if a new county home is built and warned a fire hazard exists without wall repair. The board may seek a state nursing license and consider a public vote on building a new home within five to ten years.
