Des Moines markets show receipts around 45000 this Wednesday with uneven trading. No. 1-3 cattle by weight ranges sell from 16.25 to 19.90 per cwt for various live weights, with sows and barrows fluctuating 15 to 25 cents.
USDA cattle receipts show 7 400 head with calves 150. Fed steers strong to 25 cents higher, most grades steady to higher. Cows steady to weak, bulls and cutters steady. Stockers and feeders scarce. Top loads show prime fed steers at 25 plus, most good to low choice $20 to $24, heifers $22 to $25, commercial cows around $16 to $16.50.
AP cattle report from Sioux City notes receipts uneven with slaughter steers up 26 cents to around 26 cents higher, high choice and prime loads about 1.225 lb, steers around 24.25 with bulk choice 22.50 to 23.50. most choice heifers 22.00 to 23.00, utility cows 14.00 to 16.00, bulls 15.00 to 17.50, stock steers 17.50 to 20.00.

WASHINGTON AP Two witnesses challenged the senate internal security subcommittee's right to question them citing Supreme Court rulings. Howard Trautman and Salvatore Testa of New York refused to testify in a probe into communism in unions. The hearing was postponed to allow the nine member panel to study the points raised.
Des Moines AP report says three staff changes occur July 1 in the attorney general's office. Hugh V. Faulkner of New Sharon named research assistant, succeeding James Gritton. Harrison Cass resigns as special assistant to the Board of Social Welfare effective July 20 to return to private practice. Frank Bianco to replace Cass, with Gritton moving to claims and Faulkner to replace Gritton.
Frank Woods 56, a longtime implement and hardware dealer in Mechanicsville, died Wednesday morning at a Cedar Rapids hospital after a heart attack Tuesday. Services tentatively set for Friday at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian church, burial in Mechanicsville cemetery. Body at Horner funeral home. Survived by wife four brothers Clair Weldon Glenn Dale and a sister Ruth McCaleb.
A Cedar Rapids salesman Othell Wucherpfennig filed a bankruptcy petition in Cedar Rapids district court. Debts total $9,191.27 with assets of $2,111.40, including $500 exempted. The case was referred to John H. Mitchell of Fort Dodge, bankruptcy referee for the Northern District of Iowa.
Mrs Robert M Hess was elected president of the Marion P T A Council at a Monday meeting during the Longfellow school workshop. New officers include Mrs Dale Lowe as vice president Mrs Ralph Huffman as secretary and Mrs Harold Stowell as treasurer. Sixty five officers and chairmen attended the event with installation by Mrs Kenneth Potter.
Emery J. Miller, longtime Marion school board secretary, resigned at a board meeting citing “press” of other duties. Miller, who first served 1915 to 1946 and again since 1952, is also president of First National Bank. The board approved purchasing a GMC truck chassis and Oneida bus body for 6240 dollars through Stone Truck Company.
A Marion Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Thursday at 7 30 p m in City Hall will feature a report on a basic planning zoning and land use ordinance by Rowat and Murray city planning engineers. Council members will also attend. The commission met Tuesday at First National Bank and heard W A White petition for a road to a proposed school site but took no action.
At Chicago Midway airport a bride-to-be tried to give her honeymoon daughter money before a departing plane. A propeller’s blast scattered $200 in cash. attendants recovered $75, with the rest lost in the field. The woman fainted and left in tears.
Iowa City AP report says a specimen of the influenza virus from Asia was sent to University hospitals for study in case of Midwest outbreaks. No U.S. cases, no alarm, says Dr. A P McKee. Virus isolated in Japan and antigen developed for rapid identification.
Springfield Illinois The Illinois senate on Wednesday defeated a bill to ban the death penalty on a six year trial basis. The measure received 11 votes and needed 29 for passage.
Chicago (UP) railroad brotherhoods report circulating strike ballots against North Western over a plan to lease its Omaha line subsidiary as an economy move. They fear the lease may jeopardize seniority rights while the company expects to save about two million dollars annually.

John J. Finkey, 82, farmer and former Walker resident, died Tuesday at Guthrie Center. Born August 16, 1876 in Walker, he lived there until moving 30 years ago.
