Second Case of Beef Cattle Disease Found in Iowa
The second positive case of Theileriosis, a cattle disease spread by Asian longhorned ticks, was detected in Van Buren County in southeast Iowa less than two weeks after the first case. Experts, led by Iowa State University Extension beef veterinarian Grant Dowell, warn the tick favors tall grass habitats and cattle, deer, and other ungulates are primary hosts. Human health is not affected, but symptoms in cattle include lethargy and pale mucous membranes. treatment is supportive, with fluids and possible blood transfusion in severe cases, while prevention focuses on tick control and pasture management.
