Freedom Stitchers of Iowa honor veterans with quilts
Cedar Rapids resident Bernadion Coy received a Quilts of Valor in 2014 for her World War II service in the Women’s Army Corps. Elayne Gassett, a Quilts of Valor volunteer, founded Freedom Stitchers of Iowa in Winterset, now 77 members, with over 90 quilts completed and a 159th in progress.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation has donated nearly 140000 quilts to veterans nationwide. Freedom Stitchers of Iowa formed as Cedar Rapids chapter last summer. Readers can nominate recipients at govf.org or join the Cedar Rapids group by calling Elayne Gassett at 319 551 4492. Donations can be made via PayPal or by mail to Winterset headquarters. Fabric donations are also requested through govf.org.

Less strict rules govern goose meat donation in Cedar Rapids
Cedar Rapids and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources led a Monday roundup of 161 adult Canada geese along the Cedar River. The 1 pound portions of ground meat will be donated for needy use under the custom exempt process, not for sale, with labeling not for sale or poultry exempt.
