Homeland Security chief defends border handling of unaccompanied children
Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson told the House committee that measures to curb smuggling and a public relations push in Central America would address the influx of unaccompanied children crossing from Mexico. He predicted the surge would continue next year as more than 47 000 children from Guatemala El Salvador and Honduras arrived this year. CBP captures about 250 children daily with an estimate of 150 000 more potentially crossing. Republican leaders urged National Guard deployment at the Southwest border, accusing the administration of a humanitarian crisis and demanding action.
