Legislative action boosts pay for Iowa workers
The Iowa legislature moved to raise non union workers pay, targeting about 40 000 state workers with roughly 135 million in pay and fringe benefits funded by the general treasury road fund and other sources. Opponents warned of disrupting union and non union benefit balance amid a pending two year pact between the state board of regents and UNI faculty. If approved by the senate the ruling could force re negotiations over the two year contract and may prompt court tests to settle the regents faculty deal before July 1.

Carter Funds To Be Added To Gifts and Pay Raises
President Carter’s 6000 gift to the government will join existing treas ury funds built by patriotic contributors and lawmakers who refused pay raises. The treasury says it will accept the money to meet general expenses, with past gifts totaling 754 500, a debt-reduction fund of 210 600, and a 66 000 conscience fund. Treasury notes it does not encourage gifts, and regulations allow setting aside funds to reduce the national debt though most goes to the general fund.
