Surgeons defend Public Health Service as abolition debated
Surgeon General Jesse L. Steinfeld defends the commissioned corps of the Public Health Service amid a report advocating its abolition. He argues the group’s mission supports hospitals, care for seamen and lepers, and health facilities, while critics call for absorbing specialists into the civil service and cutting the corps. The debate follows a Nixon administration review led by John A. Perkins amid broader health service reform talks.
