Lisbon Farm Builds Intensive Hog Unit On 80 Acre Farm

A 28 by 180 foot farrowing house two miles east of Lisbon leads a two-unit hog operation run by P. L. Greiner withPeter Greiner and Raymond Wendler. They target 3,500 hogs marketed yearly under a strict schedule. The facility features automatic waterers, creep-area feeders, hot water radiant floor heating, a 250,000 BTU furnace, thermostats, antifreeze lines, and sand fill with plastic moisture barrier. Sows and pigs are kept in separate sections with climate control to ensure comfort and efficient labor.

Pig farming system uses steam cleaned house and high moisture silage

The Greiners operate a hog farm with a large farrowing unit, finishing pens, and an intermediate prowing center. They raise 115 sows with Hampshire and Yorkshire crosses, feed self-propelled rations, and plan a new 28 by 192 foot finishing building to handle hog volume. They emphasize acclimation, gilt selection, and a shift toward high moisture corn storage while maintaining crib storage for ground hog feed.

The group stays with Gordon Hatchery in Marion for a chicken barbecue.

Rooster and Hen Prices Dip Across Iowa Markets

Dean Kildee to lead two month Latin America tour

Dean Emeritus H H Kildee of Iowa State University will depart Ames around July 18 for two months in Latin America. He will judge major livestock shows in Salvador, Medellin, and Bogota, visit farms, offer livestock training, and conduct veterinary refresher courses. This marks his 19th Latin America trip and sixth to Colombia.
