Minot Ramps Up Protections as Souris Flood Front Approaches
Minot officials say they have done all possible to shield critical infrastructure as the Souris River nears a record flood. Dikes around the sewer lift station were raised to the limit, and water plant protections are assumed secure. About 10,000 residents, a quarter of the population, were evacuated with voluntary expansions adding roughly 400 people. The river’s rise stems from upstream rain and snowmelt, with Lake Darling dam releases potentially lifting water 2 to 3 feet more, possibly reaching 6 1/2 feet above the 1881 record. Burlington residents also evacuated to aid Minot, conceding the city’s defenses may fail.
