University of Iowa research suggests Medicare could curb soaring costs and help more patients by using suitcase-sized external defibrillators instead of smaller implantable devices, potentially expanding access and reducing expenses.
University of Iowa research finds implantable cardioverter defibrillators cost about 115000 per patient with upkeep, versus 5500 for automated external defibrillators. About 40000 Medicare patients receive implants annually, totaling roughly 4.6 billion dollars in Medicare spending, highlighting potential cost and benefit tradeoffs.

The tiny arm bone of a baby giant sloth linked to more than 30 bones may unlock Ice Age mysteries. University of Iowa curator David Brenzel notes these rare bones, found near Shenandoah beside 90 bones of an adult sloth. Excavation has run three years with researchers and volunteers from the museum and state science agencies.
At the University of Iowa Museum of Natural History researchers found baby sloth bones in southwest Iowa after a spring dig. A replica of a giant sloth nicknamed Rusty is on display as scientists note a delicate mystery bone and a tiny arm bone confirming the find.
Federal indictment says group led by Narseal Batiste swore bayat to al Qaida and planned attacks in Chicago and other cites, including the Sears Tower, but explosives were not obtained, no weapons found, and an informant infiltrated the group. Officials call it aspirational not operational.
