Voters in Mount Vernon and Lisbon decide on a school merger in an election today from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. City locations Vernon and Lisbon host polling. Community meetings follow in Cedar Rapids and Linn County offices with multiple informal sessions.

Marion Independent seeks a new superintendent. some members push for earlier administrative sharing, while most Linn-Mar members prefer incremental changes.
A Linn County man, Michael Hughes, files a federal civil rights suit in Cedar Rapids alleging deputies assaulted him after a June 19 1984 drunken driving arrest at the Linn County Jail. He claims severe injuries and seeks both compensatory and punitive damages.
Seven new members join the Cedar Rapids School Economy Task Force as the school board named five existing advisors and two community figures, plus the board approved earlier appointees. The group will report on efficiency and documented savings by Oct. 20.

The Linn County Zoning Board of Adjustment Tuesday tabled a proposed greyhound breeding operation by James Merritt after deeming his site plan incomplete and not available to officials and neighbors. Merritt plans to house two females and 16 puppies on 15 acres with potential transfer to an out of state facility after a year. A separate case granted a conditional permit for a 2000 foot radio tower at 3450 Paris Rd to satisfy FCC rules, with construction to start after next March.
George Nassif 19 of 414 14th St SE died at St Luke's Hospital from injuries after a helmetless motorcycle collision with a pickup driven by Russell Schmidt 66 of Alburnett on First Avenue East near 29th Street Drive SE. Schmidt did not require hospital treatment. police continue investigation.
