John L. Stone 69 of Guttenberg formerly of Cedar Rapids died Sunday in a Dubuque hospital after a short illness. Born June 4, 1911 in Central City he served in the Navy in World War II and retired from Cedar Rapids Water Department. Survivors include his wife two sons Lee and Steven two daughters Karen Archer one brother Jess and eight grandchildren. Services Thursday in Central City with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Numerous other notices list funeral plans for residents of Cedar Rapids and nearby towns with services at churches and burial sites, reflecting a busy period of local obituaries and memorial offerings.

Illinois man Orville Kelly dies after cancer battle
Orville Eugene Thompson Kelly born August 2, 1930, died after a seven year cancer fight. A former Army sergeant stationed at Eniwetok Proving Grounds witnessed 22 nuclear detonations. He founded Make Today Count with 18 others, growing to about 250 chapters in the United States, Canada, Australia and West Germany to aid those with serious illnesses and families. He declined life support, hoped to celebrate his 50th birthday, and is survived by his adoptive family. Margaret Hansen of Make Today Count vows the philosophy will endure.
