Hot Weather Care for Pigs In Iowa Recommendations
Iowa State economists nutritionists and engineers urge heat protection for pigs. Housing shading air movement mist drips concrete wallows and hose cooling help pigs reach market earlier. Heat above 90 degrees can slow growth though feed use stays similar. Proper protection improves conception rates and litter size.

Shifts in Inputs and Labor in U.S. Agriculture 1940–1960
Rex Corn analyzes how purchased inputs surged from 29.4 percent to 56.3 percent of farm resources between 1940 and 1960, while labor share dropped from 56.2 percent to 28.9 percent. He notes rising costs for machinery and fertilizer, with land values rising due to inflation and overall farm income squeezed by input costs and product prices.

Milking Intervals Show No Big Difference for Cows
University of Minnesota dairy researchers A C Linnerud J B Williams and J D Donker reported at the American Dairy Science Association meeting that milking cows every 8 or 12 hours produced similar results to a 12 hour interval. The study used twin dairy animals to compare intervals across groups.

Stritzel Advises When To Side-Dress Corn
Iowa State agronomist J A Stritzel says side dressing corn with nitrogen by the 12 to 15 inch height gives best uptake. Later side dressing works if rainfall moves nitrogen into the root zone, while applying at laying time is risky in drought. Fields most needing nitrogen are those following corn or grass that did not receive manure last fall or this spring.
