McCook Nebraska marked its golden anniversary with crowds and a whisker growing gala. W C LaTourette, McCook’s first mayor and early settler, attended as guest of honor and recalled frontier days as the town expanded from 1 000 residents in 1882 to about 7 000.
The town marked its fiftieth anniversary with Gay decorations and named days like Railroad Leap Year Progress Farmers. Villagers once took three days to reach the town to file homestead rights papers, while Former Mayor LaTourette traveled thirteen hours by car from the Hotel Roosevelt to attend the latest celebration, noting the evident progress since its early days.
Howard R. Green Co. will supervise a Spencer paving project replacing asphalt with reinforced concrete. The 45 000 yard contract, awarded to National Construction Co. of Omaha, totals 66 000 dollars, a likely record low for concrete work in 15 to 20 years. The project covers streets damaged by fire last summer and includes a water softening plant contract awarded to Gjellefald Co. of Forest City.
