Stormy start to week hits Eastern Iowa with hail and winds
Eastern Iowa endured multiple storm rounds Monday with 94 mph gusts in Independence and golf ball to baseball sized hail in Cedar Rapids Hi a watha and Marion. One Fayette County resident injured when a home blew off its foundation. Albia grocery damaged by what appeared to be a tornado. No major flooding or injuries reported beyond the one incident. The Cedar River crested at 7.81 feet, far below flood stage, and the weather outlook suggested more storms on Wednesday.

Fatal Lightning Strike at Pleasant Creek State Park
A camper witnessed the fatal lightning strike that killed 42 year old Rebecca McCarty at Pleasant Creek State Park in Palo on Saturday around 5 30 p m. Witnesses described a bright bolt hitting McCarty as she walked between campsites while responders attempted life saving measures. McCarty a Kennedy High School graduate and Transamerica employee leaves a husband Jay and children Jayson Payton and Madison with parents John and Patricia Fritz. A small sign near the campground memorializes her with Rest in Peace Becky.
