Lawmakers push guilty but mentally ill plea after Hinckley verdict
Iowa lawmakers say Hinckley’s insanity ruling could revive effort to add a guilty but mentally ill option. Rep. Roger Halvorson notes momentum to recognize crime amid mental illness while noting current insanity pleas succeed rarely and defendants may be civilly committed rather than released. Oakdale officials cite few inmates once found not guilty by reason of insanity, while critics warn of longer institutional stays in states where the plea is used more often.

Insanity Defense Debated by Area Professionals
