Federal Government May Up Meat Inspection Pay
Washington AP report notes a House Agriculture subcommittee approved a modified bill to raise the federal share of meat inspection costs, with a 10 to 5 vote in favor. The Senate Agriculture Committee previously rejected and revised its version. The proposal would allow the secretary of agriculture to withhold funds from states enforcing stricter labeling or packaging rules, while permitting tougher sanitation and inspection standards.
