Des Moines Iowa Secretary of State Melvin Synhorst was named chairman of a 19 member committee to study postal rates for state governments. Appointed by Mississippi Secretary of State Heber Ladner the panel will seek cheaper bulk mailing rates and report at the national convention in California this fall.

Newlywed Couple Finish 12 Day River Trip By Boat
Mr and Mrs Ben Zell Des Moines completed a 12 day riverboat honeymoon traveling from Stillwater Minnesota down the Mississippi to St Louis then up the Missouri to Omaha. They ended the voyage on a 21 foot cabin boat near the Mormon bridge. Mrs Zell admitted she was scared at times but praised river people the coast guard and the army engineers for help.

Tragedy Strikes Iowa Falls Farm Family in Tractor Deaths
An AP report details two tractor related fatalities near Iowa Falls. Dean Elliott, 13, died after a tractor ran over him while clearing weeds at his stepfather’s farm. A two year old girl, Suzanne Neubauer, died from injuries after a fall from a tractor her father was driving, later succumbing at a Rochester hospital.

Governor Offered $900 Car for the Governor
A Des Moines report says Holmes Oldsmobile offered a 1956 Oldsmobile sedan with air conditioning for 900 dollars to Governor Leo A. Hoegh. Secretary of State Melvin Synhorst protested, citing state law capping the governor’s car price at 2000 dollars. The executive council will decide next week with one competing bid from Herron Olds Cadillac for 3373.89 dollars and a suggestion the governor deserves a 7565 dollar Cadillac.
